Kitchen appliances that offer efficiency, function and personalization tend to catch my eye and I was inspired by a couple of offerings while attending the National Kitchen & Bath Association KBIS 2018 recently.

Speaking of kitchen appliance trends that are not only listening and responding to consumer desires and wish lists to personalize their homes to suit their lifestyles, Thermador has taken this concept seriously with the introduction of its new Freedom Induction Cooktop. The “intuitive features allow for greater control and ease of use,” according to Thermador and is marketed as “the largest fully usable cooking surface on the market within its class.”

Available in 30″ and 36″ I marvel at how this intuitive cooktop has the capability to “automatically recognize the size, shape, and position of cookware on the surface! So many key features enhance this product I encourage you to take a look for yourself.

Kitchen storage is another huge trend that is shaping kitchen design in a powerful way. From pantries to wall, corner and base cabinets technology is driving innovation storage solutions that are lifestyle friendly.

Kesseböhmer (CleverStorage), a world leader in creating exceptional kitchen storage solutions also inspired and impressed me with its product designs that bring efficiency and enhanced function to the kitchen space. Improved accessibility, organization while transforming wasted space into practical usable space was exciting to see.

What I really loved was Kesseböhmer’s introduction of the iMove intelligent pull-down system for wall cabinets. This system makes those hard to reach top shelf wall cabinets accessible as we’re seeing taller built-in cabinet units become a stable trend in kitchen design.

Features include the choice of one or two shelf option, soft open and close mechanisms, an option to fit cabinets widths from 21″ to 36″ and four finishes to choose from. This high quality and innovative line of storage solutions will bring order to your kitchen and efficiency to your life!

Pantone’s Color of the Year 2017 Greenery was introduced with great delight on my part with its fresh and hope-filled hue that raced around the world with a frenzy from interior design to fashion and merchandising applications. Now, according to Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, the “Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” And the message of Ultra-Violet, Pantone Color of the Year 2018 is what’s needed today.

Words like “inventiveness,” “imagination,” and “creative inspiration” speak the language of Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet. This blue-based purple inspires exploring new technologies, artistic expression and spiritual reflection according to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

But you may be asking at this point how should you incorporate this Ultra Violet into your decorating plan? By using the same basic design fundamentals that ensure a great outcome. I love Nancy Fire, creative director of HGTV Home, response to questions of applying the color purple to interior design: “Ultra Violet works well as an accent pillow, wallpaper geometric combined with grey, and of course, a regal color that plays well with grey, loden green and many neutrals.” In other words, pay close attention to scale, balance, pattern and texture within the space you are designing.

So, for those who appreciate visuals I’m including a variety of applications that hopefully will inspire you to incorporate this regal color into your interior design. This color is perfect for the adventurous and will add a touch of royalty to your home!

The 2017 Home for the Holidays designer showhouse will inspire design enthusiast for decades with its masterful blend of dynamic color, style and detail within the art of modernizing classic design style.

This new, 8,800 square-foot luxury built home in North Atlanta designed by Harrison Design and constructed by Sheehan Built Homes is filled with design details that go beyond the expected to daring and bold. Beginning with Robert Brown’s painted living room walls finished in a bold eggplant hue (Farrow & Ball’s Pelt, No. 254) to Barbara Westbrook’s dramatic entry hall accented with hand-imprinted porcelain butterflies, inspiration is limitless throughout the home.

The relaxed elegant feel to the showhouse home is serenely attractive as it draws you in emotionally to pay attention to the luxurious details that bring life to daily living. The textiles, wallcoverings, flooring, seating and custom appointments set each room apart in a unique yet complementary way.

A few of my favorite spaces include the master suite with its use of antique furnishings adapted for contemporary lifestyles by Patricia McLean Interiors. The inviting laundry room that brings delight to everyday chores by Davenport Designs, Ltd. The open keeping room showcasing the outdoor view is also a favorite designed by Shayelyn Woodbery Interiors. The sleek pro-chef kitchen, designed by Bell Cabinetry & Design, captivates me with its modern finishes while staying true to the old English style of the house. The living room (mentioned earlier) tops my favorite spaces with its perfectly balanced use of scale, color, texture and finishes, a true showcase of talent by Robert Brown Interior Design.

A 6,500 square-foot villa in the Andrea Hills area of Palm Springs and home of social media star Kelly Lee and her husband, Klaus opened their home to more than 20 designers for the 2017 Christopher Kennedy Compound Modernism Week Showhouse.

The openly bold and bright interiors display modern design at its best. From the cheerful entry anchored by a modern chess dressed in an antique mirror finish by Kate Spade New York to colorful and luxurious custom furnishings throughout, this home is a breath of fresh air.

Living on the bright side will come naturally in this glamorous home. Each room is open to natural light and open layouts. The kitchen showcases an elegant tile backsplash by Tilebar, a custom gold accented hood and hardware. The striking bar stools with polished gold tone legs add the finishing touch like a great piece of jewelry completes the look of a great outfit.

Creative and unique design elements found in the home office offer a contrasting chevron tile pattern, custom wallcovering and a contemporary lighting fixture.

Kitchen Floor Hardwood is still the most popular flooring material with engineered wood and laminate growing in popularity.

Kitchen Cabinet We see them everywhere because their transitional style is so appealing; the Shaker style cabinetry with its recessed center panel offers a clean, crisp look that simply works. Kitchen Lighting Although under-cabinet lighting has been a popular trend for years, a growing interest for lighting inside the cabinetry to improve visibility and access for those not-to-often used appliances and serving pieces will continue to rise in popularity.

A luscious yet manicured and layered landscape describes this California backyard complete with water features and outdoor dining makes this a weekend retreat a daily treat. Thoughtful landscape planning with a functional foundation and easy-care flowering vines and shrubs produced an oasis of natural beauty and relaxation that is simply captivating.

Comfort and function are seen in the poolside layout that affords a tranquil environment for relaxation.

This outdoor living space is anchored by box woods in shapely forms, vine-covered wooden arbors with Cécile Brunner climbing roses, wisteria and creeping fig.

Antique lanterns and vintage water features and comfortable seating round out this lovely outdoor living space.

It comes as not surprise that this beautiful outdoor space houses a wonderful potting shed whose entry embraces a vintage door perfectly suited for the overall landscape design.

Although it took years for the landscape to mature it was worth the wait and is enjoyed year round because of its west coast location. A perfect backyard to come home to everyday!

Demand for smart home features in the kitchen remains solid according to the American Institute of Architects’ “Home Design Trends Study” for the fourth quarter of 2017. They go on to say that this “…isn’t a surprise as more new systems and products are being introduced at a dizzying pace, ensuring accessibility throughout these areas and promoting convenience remain priorities for homeowners.”

Promoting convenience is a key design element in creating a smart kitchen.

Smart Storage A recent Houzz Study found that the majority of households that participated were focused on de-cluttering their counters and wanted to make updates that included cabinet storage and organization features. Popular storage updates include pull out waste or recycling baskets, cookie sheet/tray organizers, revolving corner trays, deep drawer organizers and pull or swing out trays and shelves.

Smart Technology The same Houzz Study of over 1,700 U.S. homeowners found that incorporating new electronics in the kitchen is a key element of the renovation process. Popular categories of smart technology include home assistants, wireless and voice-controlled kitchen appliances.

Other smart appliances that made the Best of KBIS 2018 included Samsung’s Family Hub 3.0 Refrigerator while the GE Profile Wall Oven with Assisted Cook and the Whirlpool Smart Front-Control Range made the 2018 Best of IBS Kitchen Product category. The Whirlpool Smart Over-the-Range Microwave also made the Best Home Technology Product category.

I think we just validated the Houzz Study mentioned earlier, convenience is a key design element in creating a smart kitchen!

Although the term ‘luxury’ is relative to the beholder, luxury bathroom renovations contain design elements that speak luxury to the homeowner. The Bath of the Year Winner commands attention from the elegant entrance to the slightly oversized French limestone flooring that continues in the shower. The Calacatta Viola marble countertops invite serenity in this light filled bath retreat.

Other design elements that are trending for luxury baths include “showers that include rain heads, body sprays and aging-in-place features such as larger spaces that incorporate a shower, bench and perhaps a tub, all in the same wet zone” according to Kitchen & Bath Design News.

The Bath of Year, designed by Robin Burnett, contains transitional elements that allow handcrafted custom features to shine. A free-standing Olivia Tub and artwork by Clay McLaurin that brings in subtle color all work together in creating a true escape from the busyness of life.

The french doors support the entrance to clean lines, open floor plan that support the oversized shagreen mirrors and elegant Lucite and brass hardware, sconces with a touch of basic utility in the tripod oak stool placed in the shower.

Bold design in every aspect from vibrant color and pattern to custom furnishings describes this 1939 Colonial Revival Detroit home and I promise it will move you out from your comfortable neutrals to desiring a spark of color to your interiors.

A gentle mix of traditional and modern elements executed with expertise stopped me in my designer tracks to pause and take deeper study of this work of art, a true jewel designed by Corey Damen Jenkins & Associates, LLC.

This historic home was transformed for a young family. The designer took his cue from the homeowners love for color, pattern and a desire for an easygoing lifestyle within the home. This casual, elegant approach to design is reflected in the open, livable spaces with perfect scaling of furnishings in every room.

Custom treatments showcased in wallcoverings, textiles, art, furnishings and flooring create a breath-taking flow throughout the home. The luxe de Gournay mural in the dining room is topped off with a gorgeous 11-step lacquered Venetian plaster ceiling that leaves you speechless, understated luxury at its best.

The midnight blue and white custom prochef kitchen anchored by a La Cornue range says it all by bringing the home full circle with this high-end touch. Perfect for intimate family gatherings and meals to entertaining guests with its open floor plan and custom cabinetry. The tile detail flows beyond the traditional backsplash to extended wall sections which offers a great custom touch to the design of the kitchen.

Three talented Atlanta interior designers with three amazing kitchen renovations perfectly reflect their clients style, lifestyle needs and budget. Each project took a fresh approach to not only updating the space with modern design that increased function and style but also included many aspects that personalized the space to reflect the homeowners.

Cosmopolitan & Sophisticated Kitchen

Inspired by the owners visit to Sunset Tower Lounge in Los Angeles, designer Joel Kelly captured the look and feel described to him from their experience at the lounge. According to Kelly, the streamlined wood, stone and steel helps create a sense of history as well as the slightly deco detailing of the walnut.

Details such as deep upper cabinets, integrated refrigerator columns and second island for entertaining bring sophistication to this high-end luxury kitchen.

Modern Farmhouse Kitchen

Reiner White Design Studio brought a restaurant like quality to their clients kitchen renovation anchored by a gorgeous 13 foot vent hood made of forged raw steel that brings an industrial flair to the space. A combination of old world details such as the porcelain tile back splash fashioned in a modern key-lock pattern creates a unique connection to the old world charm.

The dual island with waterfall surfaces accommodates this family of six perfectly and a touch of brass in the detailing (as seen in the pendant lighting and seating) brings a luxurious feel to this kitchen.

Classic Kitchen with a Twist

Courtney Giles Interiors met her clients growing family needs for a larger kitchen (almost doubling the square footage) with an elegant and livable renovation with classic design with a pop of color with Benjamin Moore’s Andes Summit.

Classic detailing includes bold blue cabinetry, floral linen draperies, grass cloth wallpaper, wood walls and beautiful steel windows and doors. Truly an elegant and functional space for a family to spend tons of time in.

Cavern Clay (SW7701), Sherwin Williams Color of the Year 2019 reminds me of colors hues rooted in the 70’s and 80’s with its warm, earthy tones. This terracotta color was birthed from our “elemental roots” and is a “nod to mid-century modern style, but with a soul of the American Southwest, which together creates the desert modern aesthetic,” according to Sherwin Williams.

But what about the application and transitioning Cavern Clay into your home? It has been suggested that this warm and earthy hue is an ideal color for “flattering and design-forward aesthetics” according to Sue Wadden. It can be used as a backdrop accent in a dining room or kitchen when complemented with other design elements.

Cavern Clay can also be paired with other neutrals such as warm grays or deep browns as suggested by Sherwin Williams.
